10 Best Dog Breeds to Own

10 Best Dog Breeds to Own

Bringing a dog home is a momentous occasion in anyone's life whether you are an adult or a child. However, the responsibilities that come along with that dog can be vast and families need to be prepared to take on the extra work that will be required of them to ensure their new family member has a great life.

The first thing that any family should do before they get a new dog is to research many different breeds and determine what type of dog will be best for their family. There are many factors to consider such as the amount of exercise a dog needs, how big the dog will get, and any special care needs that some breeds may have. Families also need to consider how the dog will impact their lives to be confident that they can handle the changes. Consider one of these top ten breeds when you are beginning your new pet search.

10. Newfoundland Dog

These big dogs average between 130-150 when they are full grown, but families love these gentle giants because of their trainability and easy going temperament. Newfoundland dogs have been referred to as "nanny dogs" and the movie Peter-Pan and Nana dog made the breed ever more desirable for families. Newfoundland dogs are also praised for their excellent swimming abilities and are frequently trained as water rescue dogs.

9. Maltese

If you are looking for a small breed, hypoallergenic dog, a Maltese is a great choice for you. These dogs are one of the first toy breeds and were bred to be affectionate and loyal to their owners. These dogs make great lap dogs and can even be trained to go potty on pads in the house making them ideal for senior citizens or people who are homebound but still want a companion dog.

8. Beagle

Beagle

The beagle breed is known for their intelligence and friendly nature. They are often used as drug sniffing dogs at airports and can be trained to hunt and retrieve as well. Beagles are also one of the lowest cost dogs to own because they are not inherently prone to canine illnesses or diseases. Beagles are known for their baying however so owners should be prepared to spend time training against excessive barking.

7. Huskies

Huskies

If you want a dog with a personality, get a husky. These are working dogs who need a lot of exercise and attention. These dogs do not like to be alone and do best in families where they can get attention and play outside. Huskies also don't shed much throughout the year but do blow out their coat twice annually. They are also good natured and don't have the "dog" smell that many other larger breeds have.

6. German Shepherds

German Shepherds

People who are looking for large breed working dogs love German Shepherds for because they are intelligent, loyal, eager to please and learn. These dogs are often used as police and military dogs to sniff out drugs, bombs, and more. Shepherds love their humans so intensely that they can suffer from anxiety and do best with family groups that are home or can include the dog in their activities.

5. Pembroke Welsh Corgis

Pembroke Welsh Corgis

These smaller breed dogs are known for their short legs and longer bodies accompanied by sweet and playful personalities. Corgis are great with children and have a strong desire to please their owners making them easy to train. They only get as big as 30 pounds but are great herders and exceptionally strong for their small stature.

4. Collies

Collies

Collies are popular farm dogs that are large sized and males get to be around 60-75 pounds at full size. They are one of the most recognizable dogs due to their inclusion in many movies and their long, silky coats. Collies make great family pets and are especially fond of children. They are also loyal, intelligent but also need groomed frequently.

3. Golden Retriever

Golden Retriever

These large dogs are ideal for any type of family because they are happy to go for a run or hike, but also happy laying around the house all day. Golden Retrievers have easy going temperaments and are known for being calm, even around children that may be pulling ears or tails. These dogs are also considered one of the smartest breeds.

2. Labrador Retriever

Labrador Retriever

It is no surprise that retrievers round out the top three of the best breeds. Labradors are large dogs that can be up to 150 pounds full grown but are known for being gentle, goofy and even aloof. Labradors love and are loyal to their families, love to play, and are quick learners who are easy to train throughout their whole lives. Labradors are known for hip and joint problems as they become older, and with all large dogs, feeding them is more expensive than smaller breeds.

1. Mixed Breeds

Mixed Breeds

The very best kind of dog is often a mixed breed dog. Dogs that are mixed often avoid the health problems that their purebred counterparts often have and can have a mix of personality traits. Mixed breeds are often very attractive and unique looking with individual personalities. They are often less expensive to adopt or purchase as well.

The most important thing to do when considering the best dog for your new home is to talk to your veterinarian and make sure to get all health and ownership records for a dog you are considering. Make sure your entire family is on board with the adoption process and choose a dog that will be best for everyone.

I am thinking about owning a dog. I have done my research and came up with three dog breeds: Poochon (or Bichpoo), Bichon Frise, or Toy poodle. My dogs have to have this: non-shedding small dog breeds good for first-time owners who don’t drool. Are these dog breeds good for me?
